Jay Coffey, "Top of Pops Weekend"; KRTH K-Earth 101 Los Angeles | November 8, 1986

From the radio station that used the same jingle for over 30 years! Here’s a very capable Jay Coffey cruising through the year 1964 as K-Earth presents a “Top of Pops” Weekend!

This is Oldies radio, really at the beginnings of it’s trek to the monster L.A. station that it is today! The station is what you’d term mis-imaged as “Classic Rock & Roll” (as opposed to “Classic Rock”?). On this recording, they DON’T say OLDIES!

This is scoped, but you do get a lot of Jay Coffey and plenty of Southern California commercials which aired in the Fall of 1986 – in two stop-sets.

Thanks to Contributor Frank Davis!

In September 1998, your webmaster was in Southern California on business… as a trucker with Transcend Carriers out of Gill, Massachusetts. When I took loads out to the L.A. area, I used to park my rig at the Culver City Sports Center – a big ice skating rink used by some semi-pro hockey teams and area schools. I was lucky, my uncle was the manager so I always had a place to park an 18 wheeler.

To make a long story short, I recorded this aircheck on Uncle Butch’s Kenwood system. Unc always had the best stereo equipment, and so this aircheck is nearly perfect quality.

We join Steve Jay on a ’60s Pool Party Weekend. K-EARTH 101 seemed to always have multiple promotions going on at one time and this is no exception. Heavily promoted by K-Earth’s morning host and imaging voice, Charlie Van Dyke, KRTH is doing a promotion where listeners call in and invest in the station’s “Jock Market”. You really must listen, I LOVE the concept! Remember, in 1998, the housing market hadn’t taken off yet and the stock market was growing. It seemed like everyone was investing in their new 401K plans and whatever stock was hot on Wall Street (most notably, internet/computer stocks, as this was just before the tech crash). K-Earth 101 took advantage of this over exhuberance in capitalist greed and came up with this incredible contest!

As to the rest of this aircheck and the fantastic sound of K-Earth 101 during this time, I’m sure our CalRadioPD friend will be along to comment on who, what and why, since he seems to be the West Coast expert.

You’ll hear the names of most of the K-Earth 101 airstaff. It reads like a who’s who of legendary California jocks, plus a few. Even Brian Byrne, “Mr. Rock n Roll” is still on the air, which at the time of this aircheck would have been a 20 year run on the station!

Sure wish I had some “Jock Stock” back in ’98!

Scoped, this runs exactly 30 minutes out of an hour and a half recording (you should HEAR this aircheck UNSCOPED)!

Description by Contributor Jose Harrison:

.. This specialty weekend (which began at 12 noon on Friday) involved all the songs that peaked at #2 (Runner’s Up) in Los Angeles from 1956 to 1979. It aired the weekend before Labor Day Weekend, every year in the mid 80′s until it was unfortunately discontinued after 1988. In 1984 and 1985, music was played to the current year. From the Years 1958 to 1965, K-Earth 101 utilized the KFWB radio surveys. From 1965 to mid 1977, the Boss 30 (KHJ) surveys were used. From mid 1977 to 1985, KRTH used their own radio surveys. This same manner was used in the following weekend (Labor Day) for the Number One Music Weekend, which also was discontinued after ’88. The #1′s actually began in 1955 and was considered a Southern California music special tradition.

It is unknown which survey was used prior to 1958 on either special.

The late Dick Hugg, better known to his listeners as “Huggy Boy”, is captured here at the start of his first show on the legendary K-Earth 101! Hugg was known not only as an early and heavy influence in promoting Do-Wop music, but he heavily influenced 60s & 70s Latino (Chicano) artists. He had his own music label, Caddy Records. He even had his own Television show!

Hugg was best known, however, as a disc jockey. Starting in 1951 on KRKD, he blew through most of the major radio stations in the L.A. area finishing with this gig here on K-Earth 101.

At first listen, you wouldn’t think this was a man who had spent most of the previous 47 years on the air. He gets off to a rough start, blowing the Top Hour Kickoff… but after a while, you get the sense that this man LOVES radio, music and his listeners. There’s a real warmth here that is very rare in format radio, even on the great K-Earth 101.

There’s a lot more information available on the web, and of course, our site visitors are full of a wealth of knowledge that I’m sure they will share. Click on Comment below to add your opinion.

You are cordially invited to listen to 15 scoped minutes of “The Godfather of Oldies”, Huggy Boy!

Good radio seems to be rare here in the 21st century, but there are those moments of greatness that need to be pointed out.

From March, 2002, we bring you this excerpt from the Frazier Smith morning show on K-Earth 101. Now, this demonstrates, more than anything, that the team is perhaps more important than the individual. This is true now, more than ever. Especially where morning shows are concerned.

Everyone pitches in to create a fun atmosphere in the halls of K-Earth 101. And while you enjoy this team effort, you’ll really love the part where Ozzy Ozbourne calls in at about the 10 minute mark. You know Ozzy.. he’s out there. And in this funny bit, as Frazier Smith is congratulating the OZZ man on his then-new TV show, Ozzy is so far gone you can barely understand him. And he’s HILARIOUS! Then, towards the end of this, you’ll hear a major gaffe, as Smith goes into a stop set and says, “Pure Rock, KNAC”! And nobody calls him on it!

This one IS good. Listen for an entertainment update by Ryan Seacrest, from before he became TV famous.

Right in the shadow of 9/11, patriotism is at a 50 year high and Johnny Hayes starts out with comments about flags and buying American in two breaks in a row. One could hardly blame him, most of us felt the same way. And perhaps, thats the best part of this short scope of K-Earth 101.

I, your webmaster, personally don’t like this particular aircheck. K-Earth sounds contrived. The slogan, “K-Earth 101, Always with at least Twelve in a Row” is spoken so often my ears bleed. And yes, I’ll get yelled at for this, because working radio myself (in the Country format), the consultants pushed and pushed and pushed the 12-in-a-row theme ad nauseum because they always said that listeners would stay with the station that played the most music. But there’s no place for the jock’s creativity here, and while I say that, I also don’t know what shift this is. Overnight, perhaps? If so, maybe this was voicetracked and if not, then AMEN to CBS/Infinity for keeping things live!

Johnny Hayes has a great set of pipes, and I’m sure somewhere else where he was permitted to cut loose probably is an excellent personality. But he seems hemmed into the K-Earth 101 format, which with its soundtrack of the 1960s format sure sounds worn out (but perhaps it wasn’t in 2001).

To be sure, the two greatest things about this aircheck are Charlie Van Dyke’s voice imaging a legendary radio station, and Johnny Hayes’ patriotism. Because considering the angst toward anything patriotic today, this is surely a breath of fresh air from a time when we were all bonded together.

Courtesy of New Contributor Jeffrey James, here’s a quick scope of “Mr. Rock & Roll himself, Brian Bierne. We first heard of Brian on this website on this clip of his show from August 1981 – from your webmaster’s collection. Here, we’re treated to exactly ONE break from Bierne, who deserves a whole lot more than that but that’s all we get in a six minute scope from December of ’04.

Like WCBS-FM, K-Earth 101 is a Classic Hits station nowadays, as there are few, if any real Oldies stations that play music from the 50s and 60s anymore. Still, its one of the most popular radio stations in America, if not on this website. We hope you enjoy!

East meets West! Or, to put it a different way, try to imagine yourself in 1970-something, listening to Dan Ingram on 93/KHJ. Big Dan delivered a one liner better than Robert W. Morgan!
This proves something else. RKO General’s quick into and out of every element was far tighter than anything in the ABC chain, yet the best of the best never needed a snappy format to deliver! Nor did they need 15 minute talk-blocks in between songs for content. Dan Ingram is heard here doing a short-lived stint as K-Earth’s morning guy, filling in the enormous shoes of the late, longtime morning host Robert W. Morgan.

“Oldies Radio” K-Earth 101 was still playing the hits of the early 60s and 70s when this was recorded, much like Ingram’s second radio home for many years, 101.1 WCBS-FM New York. Here, Ingram sounds much like his old self from WABC. Upbeat, quick and sharp. Its part one of a two part aircheck that we’ll finish posting shortly!

BTW, if you notice a lack of description as to WHY Ingram was on the morning show, even with his own custom Charlie Van Dyke Top of the Hour Imaging-Jingle, watch our comments section. Those who were there (or in close proximity) will be along shortly to explain all about it!

Here’s part two of Dan Ingram’s ‘tryout’. While the exact date of this aircheck isn’t readily apparent, Robert W. Morgan had passed away just a month earlier. According to one source, Charlie Van Dyke was already chosen to take the morning show, and the week prior had different morning show hosts each day as a stunt.

Notice the music here (what you can hear of it) is solidly 60s & 70s fare. The Classic Hits 70s/80s format was still a few years away.

Thanks again to the massive Robyn Watts collection, the late Don Steele is featured in this 7+ minute scope of K-Earth 101 from sometime in the early 90s, we’re guessing around ’91 or ’92. Charlie Van Dyke’s pipes are lower than ever in the incredible imaging, and the jingles…. well, KRTH has used a variation of nearly the same jingle sing for well over 30 years now so what does that tell ya?

Very few radio stations have had the same format or call letters, especially on FM, and with the exception of a small stretch of time in the early 80s when it was AC, KRTH has been blasting Oldies to Southern California. As of this writing, it still is.

Brian Bierne "Mr. Rock and Roll"
Description by Webmaster Steve West

In the Summer of 1981, my brother Mike spent his Summer vacation in Los Angeles with relatives and while there, recorded a few tapes of L.A. radio.  Of the three tapes I had at one time, two managed to survive.

The aircheck starts with Pat Evans’ morning show. Mr. Evans does a warm, personable show, although you won’t hear many of the elements of today’s modern morning shows. You will hear highlights of the previous day’s Angels game (and it sure is nice to hear Jim Fregosi’s name again). This first segment rolls for about 31 minutes, then “Mr. Rock & Roll”, Brian Bierne steps in and begins the K-Earth 101 mid-day show. Listen for Gary Owens doing a “Knudsen” yogurt spot (are they even in business anymore?), a recorded “community events’ announcement (very nicely done!)

KRTH was then owned by RKO Radio, as was sister station 93/KHJ. KHJ, in 1981 was then a Country station, having dumped Top 40 over a year earler. It’s been long speculated what might have or could have happened had the KHJ format moved over to KRTH. Apparently, according to sources in the know, this format was indeed RKO’s attempt at taking KHJ’s fomat to ‘the next level’. This is similar to what happened at RKO’s Boston properties. WRKO was still playing music in ’81, although had toned things down and gone the AC route under the local direction of Charlie Van Dyke. It’s FM was 98.5 WROR. In 1980, WROR dumped its VERY long running automated Oldies format in favor of live, Full Service AC. By 1981, both WROR and it’s L.A. counterpart K-Earth 101 were in a direction that could have taken either or both stations to CHR. Indeed, at WROR, the Summer of1983 was the year they actually tried CHR at least on a limited basis (with no less than THREE CHR’s already in the market), but by September of ’83, WROR was back to AC. In Los Angeles, K-Earth 101 never crossed the line into CHR, although there were times that it got close. By 1985, KRTH was solidly in Oldies territory, where it would remain and eventually achieve huge ratings success.

So it is pure luck that this aircheck is one of only TWO that exist (coincidently recorded by my brother specifically for me upon my begging back in ’81) of K-Earth 101 during this very short era in it’s long, storied history.

Where are they now:krth.gif

* Pat Evans – KKDJ, 1974; KEZY, 1976; KHJ, 1979; KHTZ, 1979-80; KRTH, 1982-85. Following a five-year stint as pd at KSMG-San Antonio, Pat is now the in-house voiceover and production guy for WOAI/KTKR San Antonio.
– From laradio.com
* Brian Bierne – (b. November 7, 1946) was a radio DJ for KRTH-FM aka K-EARTH 101 in Southern California. He is known as “Mr. Rock N’ Roll”, which is his registered trademark and is considered one of the foremost historians on Rock N’ Roll. Beirne’s Los Angeles career lasted almost three decades, representing the longest continuous stint in FM radio history.

Beirne was the voice of K-EARTH 101 during the RKO days and reached legendary status as a top-rating midday personality in the Los Angeles market for 27 years – a record-setting achievement in FM radio. His radio career has spanned 40 years which included San Francisco, Chicago, Cleveland, and Sacramento among others, and he continues to host and produce Rock and Roll shows around the country. Beirne retired from KRTH-FM on December 15, 2004.

On January 18, 1991, Beirne was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

There was a time when it was common to hear the music of the 1950s on the radio. Back in the 1970s, KRTH Los Angeles was primarily a 50s Oldies station. In 1972, there was a switch to what was then called a “gold” format, featuring older hit songs from the past. At the time, this “oldies” or “nostalgia” format featuring songs from 1955 to 1963 was a novel idea since most stations played current music with only a few older songs mixed in. With the switch in format came a new name, “K-Earth”, named after Earth Day which had debuted to much fanfare 1970. The station was automated, with a generic announcer as the station voice.

(When I originally Posted this, I thought Art Laboe was the jock, but he is only featured on one promotional ad on the aircheck.)

In the mid 1960s, there was nowhere easy for British youngsters to listen to rock ‘n’ rollers like The Beatles, The Who and The Rolling Stones. Commercial radio wasn’t yet an option, and the guardians of the publicly-owned British Broadcasting Corporation considered such music immoral, antisocial and unfit for public broadcast. Off shore Pirate stations started to pop up to feed the need for Rock & Roll. But it wasn’t until September 30, 1967, the BBC switched on the transmitters of Radio 1, the country’s first dedicated pop music station. Many in the UK admired radio in the States, because of how easy it was to hear Rock & Roll, and because of the bigger than life personalities on the air. Occasionally, the BBC  would do radio specials that highlighted American radio. This aircheck features one of those shows. The BBC salutes American Radio, aired on The Beeb, back on July 4 1976, as The USA celebrated it’s 200th birthday, and features many well know American personalities like Casey Kasum, Wolfman Jack, Jeff Troy, Dennis Elsas, Larry Lujack, Wink Martindale, and others.
